Why Are Roblox and Adopt Me Banned in Some Countries?
Roblox is one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms, with millions of players logging in every day to engage with friends, create new games, and explore experiences. A core game within Roblox, created on July 14, 2017, is Adopt Me!, where players collect items, trade pets, and decorate their homes. Despite their popularity, Roblox, and therefore Adopt Me!, cannot be accessed freely in every country.
Why is Roblox banned in some countries?
When Roblox is labelled as unavailable in a country, it typically means that a government has concerns about the platform as a whole, rather than one individual game, like Adopt Me! Since Roblox allows players to communicate with others online, create their own experiences, and purchase Robux using their money, it can be difficult for then authorities to monitor what actually happens on the platform. Their concerns may include an intention to improve child safety, restrict online communication, and avoid user-generated content that may be explicit. It is important to note that these reasons vary from country to country.
Turkey 🇹🇷
Turkey is one of the most interesting and best-known examples; in 2024, Turkish authorities restricted access to Roblox after raising the concern that some content on Roblox could be harmful to children. The officials stated that some experiences and online interactions did not provide sufficient protection for the younger players.
Due to Adopt Me existing solely in Roblox, players in Turkey also lost access to the game when Roblox became unavailable.
Roblox has shown intention to resolve this issue with Turkish authorities, hoping to improve safety measures, but as of today, access remains restricted in Turkey.
Netherlands 🇳🇱
Unlike Turkey, the Netherlands didn’t ban Roblox, nor Adopt Me. Though, they did disable one of Adopt Me’s biggest features - trading.
In late 2020, the Adopt Me developers turned off trading in the Netherlands to comply with the local regulations. They explained that the change was made to obey the Dutch laws, which are designed to protect citizens, especially their youth, from mechanics that could resemble gambling or encourage the exchange of valuable virtual items.
For the Dutch, this was a huge deal, as trading is the core part of Adopt Me, allowing players to swap vehicles, pets, toys, and other rare items. Without it, collecting dream pets became much harder, and many players felt as though the game wasn’t the same any longer.
The good news is that Adopt Me wasn’t banned as a whole. Users from the Netherlands could still log in, hatch eggs, build homes, and play with friends.
Other Countries
Turkey and the Netherlands are the most well-known examples, but they aren’t the only places where restrictions have been imposed.
Over the years, Roblox has been unavailable in countries such as:
- China 🇨🇳
- North Korea 🇰🇵
- Jordan 🇯🇴
- UAE 🇦🇪
These restrictions were mostly aimed at Roblox as a platform rather than any individual experience.
The reasons for these restrictions differ between countries; some governments have expressed concerns about child safety and online communication, while others have strict regulations surrounding online gambling. Because Adopt Me exists exclusively on Roblox, any restriction placed on Roblox automatically restricts players from those countries accessing the game as well.
